Capsaicin Description

This substance is the active ingredient in chili peppers. Pure capsaicin is a hydrophobic(refers to the physical property of a molecule (known as a hydrophobe) that is repelled from a mass of water), colorless, odorless, crystalline to waxy compound. It was first isolated in 1816, and synthesized in 1930. Capsaicin can be used to discourage the abuse of certain extended-release drugs such as OxyContin and Ritalin. This substance is currently used in topical ointments in order to relieve the pain of peripheral neuropathy such as post-herpetic neuralgia caused by shingles.
