The Best Ways to Prevent Stretch Marks
by Kim Archer

The majority of folks who are afflicted with stretch marks feel embarrassed by them, particularly in the early stages at which time the scars have a red or purple appearance. Certain people are more prone to develop them than other people. Happily there is a great deal you can do when it comes to stretch mark prevention.

Stretch marks materialize when the body expands too fast and the skin cannot keep pace. Teenage girls frequently develop stretch marks on their hips and thighs. They can also crop up if you build muscle volume in the gym, if you put on a lot of weight rapidly or if you are with child. Stretch marks are the result of the mid layer of skin, known as the dermis, pulling apart after the collagen breaks. The marks become noticeable on the surface layer of skin, called the epidermis.

Watch your weight: It’s well known that quick increase in weight is one of the reasons for stretch marks. Therefore it seems apparent that the most effective method to prevent them is to not gain weight abruptly. If you are a weight lifter try to increase your muscle mass progressively. If you are a woman who wishes to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy aim to ensure you gain weight gradually. Furthermore, you will need to keep your weight gain at the recommended level, which is usually between 25 to 35 pounds. If you are not a weight lifter and you’re not expecting a baby, simply aim to sustain a healthful body mass index between 20 to 25 if you would like to keep stretch marks from appearing.

Food and micronutrients: People who consume a nourishing and balanced diet are more apt to sustain a healthy weight and are hence less inclined to stretch marks. Moreover, various nutritional elements are good for the skin.If you want to prevent stretch marks, you should eat a diet rich in fatty acids, zinc, silica and vitamins A, C and E. If you don’t get these nutrients from your diet you might wish to think about taking nutritional supplements.

Keep your skin moisturized: The collagen in the skin is more inclined to breakage and stretch marks if the skin is parched. Thus if you wish to prevent stretch marks it helps to be sure that your skin has enough water. You can help keep your skin moist by making sure that you drink the suggested eight glasses of water each day. You may also want to use a good quality cream, lotion or oil for your body. Products which contain cocoa butter or vitamins A and E are believed to be especially helpful for this purpose.
